Starting a support group?
Oct 1 2006, 11:29 PM EDT Does anyone have any experience with starting a support group? I'm having trouble finding a young adult cancer survivor support group in my community and I want to know how I could go about starting one. Where do I go to do this? How do I get in contact with other young adults who have experienced a cancer diagnosis? If anyone can help me with any info about starting a group, I would appreciate it. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Oct 13 2006, 2:23 PM EDT Have you used this searchable index on cancer411? http://www.cancer411.org/resources/index.asp You might be able to find groups that focus on young adults. Hope that helps! Do you find this valuable? |

Nov 18 2006, 5:31 AM EST I am the moderator/owner of Merkel Cell Cancer discussion group. The easiest way I found to start a group was through google groups. Here is a link to our group to show you how it can be set up. http://groups-beta.google.com/group/merkelcell?hl=en You can start your group through this link. http://groups-beta.google.com/?hl=en George Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Starting a support group?
Jan 2 2007, 9:56 PM EST Are you only looking for online support groups? because you can visit www.gildasclub.org (this will take you to the worldwide site) , next click on Find Us and a map will come up and you can see if there's a local gilda's club in your living vicinity. And believe me there's nothing like those "Red Door" Hugs!! :-) I'm truly praying for your guidance "Darlene The Poetographer" 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Starting a support group?
Jan 3 2007, 11:12 AM EST Hey Darlene, I actually checked out the Gilda's club here, but they don't have a group for young adult survivors of cancer which is what I'm specifically looking for. They actually seem to be at a shortage -- I think there is something in that. Maybe most young adult survivors just want to "forget" about the cancer and move on with their lives. Anyway, thanks for the Gilda's suggestion -- I should check in with them again and find out if they've managed to organize anything. Louise Do you find this valuable? |

Jan 10 2007, 11:31 AM EST Louise, I'm sorry that you couldn't find what you needed. Where are you located (what city)? and yes, I think you should check with them again! From my own experience, they usually try to accomodate when they are given suggestion. Please keep me updated on how things are going. www.journeyswisdom.wetpaint.com. Do you find this valuable? |

Jan 10 2007, 9:14 PM EST I'm in Toronto. I will check in with Gilda's again. My mom was just diagnosed with breast cancer, so I feel like I'm especially in need of some kind of local support system right now. I'll let you know if I find anything. Do you find this valuable? |

Jan 13 2007, 11:36 AM EST Louise, I'm sorry to hear about your mom but try to remember "Cancer" is not a death sentence anymore especially if found early. What's your mom's name, I'd like to send her healing energy if its ok. (Reiki Energy) As well as yourself. God Bless You All! Darlene Do you find this valuable? |

Jan 21 2007, 8:48 AM EST I'm in Toronto too. Look online for two excellent groups besides Gilda's. They are Wellspring (with more than one location) and Willow (Queen Street East). Look them up online. Speaking of online, my best source of support is www.bca.ns.ca Support from the Canadian Cancer Society is also amazing. Give them a call and they will send a "buddy" along by phone or in person. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Starting a support group?
Jan 21 2007, 9:34 PM EST Hi Calamity. I've checked out Wellspring -- no young adult survivor groups the last time I checked in with them (actually, there might have been one, but it was too far from the downtown area for me). I've never heard of Williow though; I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks for your advice and suggestions. Hopefully Willow will have something for YA living with the aftereffects of cancer. Take care. Louise Do you find this valuable? |

Jan 24 2007, 2:28 AM EST If you don't mind my asking, Calamity, what is your experience with cancer? Were/Are you a patient or caregiver? Are you a medical technician? How did you find this website? I'm always curious to find out how people make their way here. I hope all is well, and thank you so much for all your information. Louise Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Starting a support group?
Jan 26 2007, 9:57 AM EST Hi. My answer is BOTH. First of all I am a breast cancer survivor - or maybe that is SECOND. Also I am a women's health professional working these days mostly online as a health writer and discussion group moderator and coordinator. I found this website in my professional capacity but of course I have a personal interest. I have enjoyed - if you CAN enjoy such a topic - the contents and comments made here so congratulations. I wish there was no need for us to discuss cancer, that it was eradicated, but since we still live day to day with the disease and its fallout, I am glad to have the opportunity for some honest discussion. I am coming up to my five year mammogram and follow up oncology visit so cancer is annoyingly top of mind at the moment! Nice to meet you! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jan 27 2007, 12:48 AM EST I'm glad to hear you're coming up to five years as a survivor - I'm 4 years out from my diagnosis of ovarian cancer (I was 22 at the time). I'll be looking into rethinkbreastcancer.com for my mom (and myself). If you have any other useful links or information, please add it to the site! The more resources we can compile here, the better. And thanks for enjoying the site - it's good to hear positive feedback. It's nice to meet you, too. Thanks for joining the community! Do you find this valuable? |
