Other sources of support

Every one of us will build a support system in a different way. There are many options to choose from -- certainly enough to allow each of us to find the ones that feel right. Here are a few to choose from.

Online cancer resources

Other cancer sites
www.thiskillscancer.com for the new drug Triamazon.

There is an overwhelming number of websites that provide information on cancer -- some that are very useful and many others that probably aren't. We can help you sift through stacks of sites and mounds of URLs. Read other's feedback on cancer websites or post your own.

Online mailing lists
The support and understanding of the cancer community is just an e-mail away. In addition to other cancer websites, there are thriving communities of cancer patients connecting to each other through online mailing lists. Joining in on the conversation is as simple as knowing your e-mail address.

Using online mailing lists we can:
  • Listen in on the online conversations of others who are dealing with cancer. Many of us find it comforting to simply hear about the experiences of others who are traveling a similar road to ours.
  • Ask questions about anything on our minds concerning cancer.
  • Share our experiences by connecting with other cancer patients. We not only give but gain strength and support as we share and learn from each other.

Message boards
Many cancer websites offer message boards. Message boards -- also called bulletin boards -- are similar to mailing lists in that they provide a place for us to connect with one another. The difference is that messages placed on a message board must be read at that site; they aren't delivered into any one individual's mailbox.

Using message boards we can:

  • Pose new questions for others to answer.
  • Browse through others' messages for already-posted answers to our questions.
  • Share our experiences with the rest of the community by responding to messages.

Movies
From being just diagnosed to being a cancer survivor, the inherent drama associated with cancer is a natural draw for Hollywood's writers, actors, and directors. The storylines in these movies, however, often involve terminal cancer which is not the prognosis for many of us. Some of us may find these movies difficult to watch -- others may be able to use them as another source of support.

Books, magazines, and journals
Whether we're looking for information on where to start, treatment options or an inspirational read, there is an abundance of material available to us. We'll help you uncover the books, magazines, and journals dealing with cancer that will give you the information--or the comfort -- you're looking for.
