The vaccine has proven effective in preventing the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted virus which causes most cases of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in women. Controversy has arisen because advocates fear the vaccine will promote promiscuity in young women.
