Kidney and bladder effects

Some drugs used in chemotherapy can cause temporary or permanent damage to the kidneys or irritate the bladder. Our urine may turn orange, red or yellow, or take on a medicinal smell.

We should check with our doctor to see if the types of drugs we are taking can affect these organs, and ask what symptoms might be normal to expect. In addition, we should:

  • Notice and report to your doctor any painful or frequent urination, discolored urine, chills, and fever
  • Drink plenty of water and other mild fluids to ensure a good flow of urine through the kidneys and speedy evacuation of irritants.
