The following is a list of movies that have featured cancer as a theme or major plot point. We urge you to add your own picks to this list.

  • Life as a House (2001): stars Kevin Kline as a man dying of terminal cancer. The story follows him and his rebellious teenage son, played by Hayden Christensen, as they build a house and rebuild their relationship.
  • The Bucket List (2007): Stars Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. The story is about two terminally ill men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of to-dos before they die.
  • Stepmom (1998): stars Julia Roberts as a relectant stepmother to Susan Sarandon's two children. When Sarandon's character is diagnosed with terminal cancer Roberts' character struggles to become full-time mom.

  • Wit (2001): stars Emma Thompson as a professor diagnosed with terminal cancer. The film is an extremely intimate and unflinching look at cancer treatment.

  • My Life (1993): stars Michael Keaton as a man diagnosed with terminal lung cancer who tries to a put a lifetime of advice into a single video for his unborn son.

  • Love Story (1970): stars Ryan O'Neal and Ali McGraw as lovers from different backgrounds. The two marry after strong opposition from O'Neal's character's father, only to see McGraw's character diagnosed with leukemia at a young age.

  • Terms of Endearment (1983): stars Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger as mother and daughter with a tense relationship that undergoes further stress when Winger's character is diagnosed with terminal cancer.

  • Brian's Song (1971): stars James Caan and Billy Dee Williams and is based on the true story of two football players who go through the struggles and triumphs of their game and their lives together, including facing Caan's character's diagnosis with terminal cancer.

  • My Life Without Me (2003): stars Sarah Polley as Ann, a young wife and mother diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer who conceals her diagnosis from her friends and family. The film deals with maintaining control during the end of life.
